Must-see: the fortified town of Heusden
The old fortified town of Heusden is a must-see. Walk along the old walls, see the windmill, and explore the narrow streets. The well-kept walls are very old and make you feel like you are in the past.
Three must-see sights
Het Gouverneurshuis is a former governor's residence dating from 1592, now home to a museum about the rich history of Heusden. Step through the gate into a beautiful walled garden, then explore exhibits with historic objects, maps, and paintings. The museum café on the terrace is a lovely spot for coffee or lunch.
The Grote or Sint-Catharinakerk is a Gothic church dating back to 1555, known for its striking architecture. The tower was destroyed during the Second World War and was never rebuilt, which still marks the town's skyline today. Step inside to admire the stained-glass windows and detailed woodwork.
On the ramparts along the river stand three wooden standaardmolens (post mills), rebuilt on their original spot. They once ground grain for the town, and today they offer one of the most photographed views of Heusden, especially when their sails are turning against the sky.
